Kalu’s Second Chance at Life
Today I want to share a little story about Kalu. Not everyone in society is cruel—there are still some people who think about these helpless, voiceless, oppressed animals and come forward to help in whatever way they can.
After Kali Puja this year, Kalu suddenly appeared in our neighborhood. Perhaps he was terrified by the fireworks, or had been chased away and was wandering around in confusion with no shelter, until he somehow entered our area. He was very weak, frightened, and hungry. I gave him food, but due to lack of space, I could not give him shelter.
Days passed, and Kalu kept trying to stay in our neighborhood. But then the abuse against him began. If he entered someone’s house, he would be beaten with rods, bricks would be thrown at him to drive him away, and larger dogs would attack and bite him. One day I noticed a deep bite wound on his neck, and I spoke to Kaushik about whether we could give him a place to stay. With his agreement, Kalu started living at home.
But whenever he went outside, people in the neighborhood would chase him away again. As a result, he developed fear and frustration, barking at those who harmed him. Some people even talked about killing him and cruelly labeled him as mad. I didn’t know what to do.
At that time, a well-wisher, Pradipta Paul, came to know about Kalu’s condition from me. She immediately contacted Arya Banerjee, an animal lover who helps stray dogs through his page Forever Paws. Incidentally, Arya is Pradipta Di’s nephew.
Arya stepped forward without hesitation. He actively arranged for Kalu’s neutering operation and funded the entire process, while Pradipta Di helped us organize the transportation. Because of their kindness and quick action, Kalu’s operation was completed successfully, and by God’s grace, he was safe and recovering well.
When many were talking about harming this poor soul, there were still hearts somewhere that chose compassion over cruelty. From far away, Arya and Pradipta Di became the reason Kalu got another chance to live with dignity.
This story is not only about Kalu—it is about humanity, kindness, and hope. It reminds us that even one act of compassion can change a life forever.
To Forever Paws—may your mission continue to shine as a light for every helpless animal waiting for love and protection. May countless Kalus find safety because of hearts like yours. The world becomes kinder because you exist.
